So Pokemon can just release themselves by breaking their Pokeball.

i mean makes sense, they also break them when a catch fails (at least thats what i feel like happens since the ball becomes unusable)

I don't think this kind of thing ever happened before. They just write it this way so that it would seem that what they did was not atrocious, that you can just steal other people's pokemon simply by breaking their pokeballs.
